The purpose of this research project is to evaluate the Assessing Clinical
Ethics Skills (ACES) training tool. This is a research project being conducted by
Katherine Wasson, PhD, MPH, and a team at Loyola University Chicago. You are invited
to participate in this research project because you work as a clinical ethics
consultant or are in the field and have requested access to the training.
The purpose of the ACES tool is to assess the competency and proficiency of clinical ethics consultants in conducting ethics consultations. It is designed for use in an educational setting with simulated ethics case consultations and trained raters applying the tool. The ACES tool draws on the Core Competencies for Health Care Ethics Consultation created by the American Society for Bioethics and Humanities and the Ethics Consultant Proficiency Assessment Tool from the Integrated Ethics Program at the Department of Veterans Affairs. It focuses on the interpersonal skills of clinical ethics consultants.
The aim of this research is to:
1. To assess the effectiveness of the ACES training website.
2. To evaluate the effectiveness of the training for participants using the ACES tool.
3. To gather demographic data on the participants who use the ACES tool.
In order to evaluate the impact of the ACES tool, the study team will collect demographic data on each participant. We will also collect participants' responses to each case using the ACES tool. The risks to participants are minimal. No sensitive information will be collected. While individually identifiable information will be collected on participants, it will be stored on a secure Loyola University Chicago server and data will be reported in ways which protect privacy and confidentiality.
We do not know if there will be benefits to participants from completing the training. You may choose not to access this training.
The study has been approved by the Institutional Review Board at Loyola University Chicago.
